الدولة الأموية (Ad-dawlat al-'Umuyyah)

Land area: 13.3 million km2 (ca. China, India and Iraq together)
Era: 705-715 CE
Population: 62 million

Al-Walid's reign was marked by endless successions of conquests east and west, and took the early Islamic empire to its farthest extents. The Caliphate stretched from the Iberian Peninsula to the Indus river. Historians consider his reign as the apex of Islamic power.

The long history of Islamic architecture really begins with Walid: he began the first great building projects of Islam, the most famous of which is the mosque at Damascus.

It was also Walid that coupled Islamicization with Arabicization. Conversion was not forced on conquered peoples; however, since non-believers had to pay an extra tax, many people did convert for religious and non-religious reasons. There was great toleration of Christians in this era and several even held governmental posts.

So freedom of religion was only for those who could afford it. Sounds about right.

Its amazing how large this was and how little we learned about it in history class. I'm surprised by the amount of tolerance they exhibited especially during this time period. Well done sir.

Thanks a lot! I'm glad you like it ;) You're right, it's a really important part of history and I've never learned anything about it in class. The relation between Christians and Muslims of today should be as it was before :)
